Now I remember why I don't watch music award shows anymore.
For a few minutes, while waiting to fall asleep, I turned on the AMA.
I tuned in just in time to catch a lame-ass Toby Keith performance that was apparently titled "What Happens In Mexico Stays In Mexico".
Crapola.
While the song may have had potential, it seemed to build itself upon the bones of the Las vegas Chamber of Commerce ads chimimg that: "What happens here stays here".
All I did was have flashbacks to the time I saw Travis Tritt introducing -- on the The Tonight Show -- his brand new song, "Here's A Quarter, Call Someone Who Cares" or whatever it's called.
Sorry, Travis. You don't sing an old joke and use it as the punchline to an original composition and then sing it with all the conviction of a revelation. What's your next song gonna be called, "Stick a Fork In Me, I'm Done"?
I'm laughing already.
And I'll never understand how the presenters are chosen. Following the Toby keith song was a presentation by Carmen Elektra and John Stamos.
Huh?
Carmen Elekra? At an American Music Awards show? At least John Stamos played drums with the Beach Boys.
They awarded a "Best New Female Artist" or something. Congrats toi the winner but, sorry, never heard of you.
Get lost.
After an excruciating rap medley by dueling (tripling, thanks) rappers that I don't give a rat's ass about we finally got to see the hyped up 40+-year-old Beatles film.
Great that Ringo Starr introduced it (on film). But even greater to know that he knew, sooner than we did, that it was just a film of The Beatles singing a contrived medley of She Loves You and I Wanna Hold Your Hand and knew better to make the trip to present` it in person.
I wont go so far as Jimmy Kimmell and call it "bo-o-o-o-ring". But I will say that it didn't live up to the hype. It was a The Beatles sing a simple medley (apparantly live) of two of their biggest hits at the time.
The best thing about it was that you could hear Paul's high harmony better than you could on the record.
After that I went to bed remembering why I've forgotten to watch these music award shows.
